The Maidens' Lodge None of Self and All of Thee In the Reign of Queen Anne Emily Sarah Holt Books

That is it's most base way to describe this story, but it's so much more! The language used is old English, but it's easier to read than I thought it would be.

It's a tale of two young girls/women 1712 England. The main protagonist is Pheobe who's be been summoned by her grandmother, a very wealthy woman, Madam, to be a companion to her more favored cousin, Rhoda.

Pheobe's father, a pastor, and 4 siblings have died of the plague, and Pheobe's mother has had to go into service of a wealthy titled woman.

Pheobe's mother, Anne, was the favorite daughter of The Madam, until she decided to run off and marry Pheobe's father, a match The Madam felt very strongly against.

Pheobe finds herself in more in the place of servant than companion to the flight, rather spoiled Rhoda.

Pheobe's only friend is an elderly lady, Miss Dorothy, who lives, by the leave of The Madam, on the property in one of the six bungalows The Madam has had built for as many of the ne'er-do-well elderly female relatives who have fallen on hard times.

Miss Dorothy guides Pheobe through the many of her trials and tribulations explaining the Word of God better than most preachers of the 21st century do!

For non-Christians, this story will explain why Christians get so excited about Jesus Christ (why we cry and laugh at the same time, why we sing and dance with complete abandonment at Christian "Rock" concerts, why we believe without hesitation that our Savior is coming back for us or we will be with Him at the moment of our death, etc.) And for Christians it makes clear if we are experiencing these things, why we should. It is NOT preachy at all.

For Historical Romance lovers, you get a TRUE version of what happened during courtship and breaking of engagements in this time period.

In fact, you get a TRUE version of how letters were written and the spelling therein (the English language was in major flux at that time and education, particularly among women, generally only the very wealthy, was iffy at best.)

It's not a particularly long book, but it will take some time to become accustomed to the terms used, again, the language was in flux, but is wonderfully handled by the author, so once you get into the flow, it becomes a "can't put down" book.
